Today, the names of the giants of Scottish church history are largely forgotten in secular Scotland, and few will have even heard of Rev Thomas Chalmers (1780-1847). Yet he was described by a contemporary, the famous Thomas Carlyle, as “the chief Scottish man of his Time”. Chalmers was indeed a man of great erudition and knowledge, and was passionate about many issues, but he was above all an evangelical and a man of humble Christian faith. As Carlyle said in 1852, “It is not often that the world has seen men like Thomas Chalmers, nor can the world afford to forget them”.

The author of this booklet is a retired minister in the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) and he has succeeded admirably in presenting us with a succinct overview of Chalmer’s life and times.  We would encourage you to obtain a copy or copies of this booklet, and we trust that it will whet your appetite to learn more about this great man.
